TECHTHELEAD: Samsung’s First Device With In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

  • alt text

As Vivo demonstrates in-display fingerprint recognition and Apple is rumored to launch iPhone 8 with a similar tech, we’re left to wonder – when will Samsung take the leap? It’s definitely not going to happen this year, say analysts. But we have some clues regarding the device that will sport it first #mobilemagic

Fingerprint recognition integrated in the display is a feature that has been on everybody’s mind of late. As bezel-less phones start hitting the market, it’s normal to assume manufacturers concentrate on bringing this feature next. Samsung Galaxy S8 was the South Korean company’s first opportunity to release this feature but they failed to do it. Instead, Vivo showed at MWC Shanghai how we’d soon open our device by pressing our fingers to any part of the display.

Does that mean the manufacturer is putting it on hold? Not at all. In fact, a report from KGI states that Samsung will implement a fingerprint sensor in display next year. Samsung Note 8 might stick to the previous biometric design, but Galaxy Note 9 will definitely not. The 2018 phablet is most likely to be the first handset launched by Samsung with this technology. It’s rumored that Egis will provide the technology (which is valued at four or five times more than the regular fingerprint technology).

Of course, that won’t be the only reason you’ll want to buy the phablet. Samsung will probably improve the iris scanner and even bring a dual camera module, with a bit of luck.
