ZTE Axon 7 May Come with an Unlocked Bootloader

  • Root & Beer

When a new smartphone comes out, one of the biggest questions that surfaces is whether the bootloader will be unlocked or not. This is especially important for tinkerers, because without having an unlocked bootloader, you won’t be able to root and flash custom ROMs on your smartphone. Or even do things like flash kernels and overclock the processor. Many OEMs and carriers opt to lock the bootloaders because customers will often times tinker with their device and then expect the carrier or OEM to either fix the device or replace it. Which is why unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty. However, lately, we’ve been seeing more and more OEMs move towards allowing customers to unlock their bootloader. In fact, Motorola allows you to do so and it won’t void your warranty.

Now, when it comes to the newly announced ZTE Axon 7, the bootloader is not currently unlocked. However, that may change. According to a ZTE employee on their new community forums website, “Here’s what I can say…The amount of feedback on this topic has been huge and we’re listening!” While they didn’t confirm that they are indeed going to make the bootloader unlocked on the ZTE Axon 7, they did note that they are listening and that shows that it may be a possibility in the future. That would definitely make the ZTE Axon 7 an even more desirable device, to say the least.

For those that may have forgotten, the specs on the ZTE Axon 7 include a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 resolution display, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (the other variant features 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage), along with a 20-megapixel rear-facing shooter, and a 8-megapixel front-facing shooter. All of this is powered by a non-removable 3140mAh battery inside. It does also include a USB Type-C port, so it is definitely future-proof and this is a tinkerer’s dream phone. It’s one of just a few smartphones with 6GB of RAM right now – the other popular one being the OnePlus 3, which is on sale in more countries than the ZTE Axon 7 is currently. The ZTE Axon 7 isn’t yet available in the US, but it should be arriving fairly soon.
